About the Event
Join us on five mile hike through nature preserves on an experience of age old pilgrimage.
We will start with a short historical presentation, then Mass at St Cyril and Methodius in Lemont, a beautiful church set high on "blue hill." Next we will walk, and sing:), along approximately five miles of forest preserve to arrive at St James Catholic Church. On the way, learn about traditions of pilgrimage, the life and influence of St James, about the Catholic respect of the deceased, the history of IL and more! The journey will end with a prayer of thanksgiving, a b-y-o picnic in a historic cemetery (containing remains of at least one who was alive when Washington was president!). There will be much to be shared in this active experience of what is sacred.
Participants who would like to skip the walking portion of this event are invited to drive to St James Sag Bridge after the St Cyril and Methodius portion. At St James, enjoy light refreshments and an in depth presentation of the historical underpinnings of the church, Lemont, and the famous frontier cemetery. Both churches have long histories. St James at Sag Bridge is the oldest Catholic Church in use in Illinois- with rumors that Fr Marquette stopped nearby to pray Mass while resting from his explorations of the New World.
